Dr. Sikora, along with Sacha Gnjatic, Ph.D., Christine Chung, M.D., and Nham Tran, Ph.D., are working to improve the immune-stimulating effects of chemo-radiotherapy (CRT) in HPV-associated head and neck cancer, by targeting the tumor microenvironment (TME). Part of their work involves analyzing tumors and peripheral blood samples from patients before and during CRT and determining its effects on circulating antibodies. They’re also using mouse models of HPV-associated head and neck cancer to test different CRT dosing regimens and determine how combining CRT with an NOS (nitric oxide synthase) inhibitor as well as a genetically engineered bacteria expressing an HPV antigen influences anti-tumor responses.
