The History Behind the Fundraiser
In 2008, Dr. Keith A. Landesman, a beloved son, father, and husband lost his life to cancer. Each year his parents Jane and Dick, along with their family and friends, honor his life and legacy by raising funds to support Cancer Research Institute postdoctoral fellows whose groundbreaking research expands our knowledge of cancer and its relationship to the immune system. Since 2013, the Cancer Research Institute Landesman Fundraiser has raised more than $2 million. These funds have supported young scientists working to find immunotherapies for breast, colorectal, lung, and ovarian cancers, glioblastoma, leukemia, and lymphoma.

Programmable delivery of therapeutic gene editing molecules by engineered immune cells Dr. Yitong Ma is addressing a significant challenge in cancer treatment— delivery of gene-editing material to cancer or immune cells at the right time and in the correct context. Cancers result from the accumulation of gene mutations, and recent advances in CRISPR-based technologies offer potential solutions to rectify these mutations by providing a means to edits specific genes.

Deciphering the contribution of germinal centers to tumor control
Dr. Kevin Ng is investigating the role of immune B cells in colorectal cancer. Despite advancements in immunotherapy, patients with colorectal cancer often do not respond to treatment. Emerging evidence indicates that B cells may play a role in cancer development and may also influence response to immunotherapy. However, the triggers for B cell responses and their interactions with other immune cells in controlling tumor growth remain poorly understood.
