J. Sharpe le diagnosticaron melanoma metast\u00e1sico en 2012, pocas semanas despu\u00e9s del nacimiento de su segundo hijo. No satisfecho con los tratamientos habituales que le ofrec\u00edan, junto con su familia comenz\u00f3 a investigar sobre la inmunoterapia. Particip\u00e9 en dos ensayos cl\u00ednicos de inmunoterapia y estoy feliz de hablar sobre mi experiencia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Me inscrib\u00ed en un ensayo cl\u00ednico en el Centro Oncol\u00f3gico Moffitt, que probaba dos tipos de inmunoterapia: Yervoy y el tratamiento con linfocitos infiltrantes tumorales (LIT), que es un tipo de transferencia de c\u00e9lulas adoptivas. En efecto, fui el primer paciente en recibir este tratamiento, lo que dio el nombre a mi blog: Patient 1 [Paciente 1].<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Como al final no respond\u00ed al tratamiento, empec\u00e9 un segundo ensayo cl\u00ednico, esta vez en el Holy Cross Hospital en Fort Lauderdale. Comenc\u00e9 con pembrolizumab (el f\u00e1rmaco anti PD-1 de Merck, aprobado como Keytruda) y tuve una regresi\u00f3n inmediata y notoria del tumor (46 % en las primeras 12 semanas). Una teor\u00eda es que el efecto tard\u00edo y prolongado que tienen tanto el Yervoy como el LIT fue mejorado por el tratamiento posterior con PD-1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>La inmunoterapia permite que el cuerpo y su defensa inmunitaria natural desempe\u00f1en un papel fundamental en su recuperaci\u00f3n. Por eso hice importantes cambios para tratar de llevar una vida saludable, ya que es mi propio sistema inmunitario el que est\u00e1 luchando y derrotando al c\u00e1ncer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>El hecho de que mi historia fuera conocida y exitosa me dio la oportunidad de participar en presentaciones sobre inmunoterapia, en ensayos cl\u00ednicos y en diferentes plataformas de melanoma. Han sido experiencias incre\u00edblemente gratificantes, sabiendo que llego a otros pacientes pero tambi\u00e9n a los cient\u00edficos, m\u00e9dicos y profesionales farmac\u00e9uticos que trabajan para curarlos, y curarnos. Si un m\u00e9dico se entera de un nuevo medicamento, si un paciente recibe el tratamiento adecuado, si un investigador encuentra inspiraci\u00f3n para trabajar en un tratamiento nuevo y mejor, entonces todo el tiempo dedicado a escribir, hablar y defender habr\u00e1 valido la pena. Espero poder influir en m\u00e1s vidas y devolver el enorme apoyo y todas las oportunidades que se me brindaron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Quisiera transmitirles a los dem\u00e1s pacientes lo importante que es defenderse y tomar las riendas de su propia salud. Investigar las mejores opciones y tomar una decisi\u00f3n informada sobre el tratamiento que sea mejor para s\u00ed mismo.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Tambi\u00e9n alentar\u00eda a todos los pacientes a buscar ensayos cl\u00ednicos. Puede que no sea la mejor opci\u00f3n para todos, pero es importante saber que los pacientes con c\u00e1ncer reciben al menos el tratamiento habitual y tienen la posibilidad de recibir nuevos medicamentos que pueden salvarles la vida m\u00e1s r\u00e1pidamente.<br>&nbsp;<br>Pero sobre todo, deben mantenerse fuertes.
