Meses despu\u00e9s, su esposa Dixie le descubri\u00f3 un bulto en el pecho. Tras una biopsia y un diagn\u00f3stico inicial err\u00f3neo de c\u00e1ncer de mama, fue al Centro Oncol\u00f3gico MD Anderson por una segunda opini\u00f3n. En 2016, d\u00e9bil y apenas con fuerzas para levantar a su nieto de dos a\u00f1os, Rick se enter\u00f3 de que ten\u00eda c\u00e1ncer de ri\u00f1\u00f3n en estadio IV. Dixie y su hija Katie le aconsejaron que se inscribiera en un ensayo cl\u00ednico que combinaba los medicamentos de inmunoterapia nivolumab (Opdivo\u00ae) y bevacizumab (Avastin\u00ae). Despu\u00e9s de la tercera infusi\u00f3n, las exploraciones de imagen por TAC revelaron \u00abresultados notables\u00bb: el tumor del pecho se hab\u00eda reducido en un 40\u00a0% y el tumor del h\u00edgado en un 25\u00a0%. Rick va al m\u00e9dico cada cuatro meses para hacerse exploraciones de imagen y en los \u00faltimos 18 meses no ha recibido ning\u00fan tratamiento contra el c\u00e1ncer. Est\u00e1 agradecido de haber recuperado su vida, de haber vuelto a trabajar a tiempo completo como ingeniero y de poder disfrutar de sus tres nietos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>PUESTA AL D\u00cdA: Rick falleci\u00f3 el 11 de marzo de 2020 de un tumor cerebral.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Su esposa, Dixie, comparti\u00f3 con el CRI lo siguiente: \u00abEstamos sumamente agradecidos por los incre\u00edbles cuatro a\u00f1os m\u00e1s de vida que la inmunoterapia y el ensayo cl\u00ednico del MD Anderson le dieron a Rick. En ese tiempo nacieron tres nietos, uno en un d\u00eda de infusi\u00f3n\u00bb. Adem\u00e1s de ser un padre y abuelo cari\u00f1oso, Rick participaba mucho en su comunidad y fue mentor de muchos ingenieros j\u00f3venes.
