Mediante un exitosa cirug\u00eda le extirparon el tumor, pero, por desgracia, el c\u00e1ncer regres\u00f3 varios meses despu\u00e9s. No satisfechos con las opciones de quimioterapia que les presentaron, Philip y su esposa Susan buscaron otras alternativas. Viajaba mucho por trabajo y me sent\u00eda muy cansado. En una oportunidad llegu\u00e9 a casa tras haber conducido 18 horas desde Charlotte y choqu\u00e9. Mi esposa me despert\u00f3 al d\u00eda siguiente y me dijo que \u00edbamos al m\u00e9dico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fuimos el lunes por la ma\u00f1ana y el m\u00e9dico me examin\u00f3 bien. Comenz\u00f3 a presionarme el abdomen alrededor de la costilla inferior derecha y dijo: \u00abBueno, se supone que eso no debe estar ah\u00ed\u00bb. Y efectivamente hab\u00eda algo duro justo debajo de la costilla. Me llevaron al hospital el viernes, me abrieron y me extirparon un tumor de 1.7 kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El d\u00eda de la cirug\u00eda tambi\u00e9n era nuestro segundo aniversario de bodas. Con Susan nos dese\u00e1bamos feliz aniversario emocionados. Tras unas 40 grapas, por fin pude salir del hospital. Regres\u00e9 a casa el lunes y tuve que hacer mucho reposo. No estaba trabajando. Estuve en cama durante aproximadamente un mes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Sab\u00eda que algo andaba mal y, efectivamente, el m\u00e9dico me dijo que hablar\u00edamos luego. Dijeron que no hab\u00eda nada que pudieran hacer; pod\u00edan darme quimioterapia. Iba a seguir el tratamiento tradicional de la quimioterapia, pero mi esposa estaba constantemente al tel\u00e9fono. Desde la cama pod\u00eda escucharla hablando con gente, tratando de averiguar qu\u00e9 hacer, ad\u00f3nde llevarme. Se puso en contacto con el MD Anderson en Houston y entonces fuimos all\u00ed en marzo. Yo segu\u00eda muy dolorido por la segunda cirug\u00eda y las grapas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nos reunimos con el cirujano y me dijo: \u00abSr. Prichard, no deje que nadie m\u00e1s lo vuelva a abrir. No hay c\u00f3mo extirpar el tumor debido a su ubicaci\u00f3n\u00bb. Dijo que se hab\u00eda esparcido como reguero de p\u00f3lvora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No obstante, me puso en contacto con un onc\u00f3logo, el Dr. Tannir, y su equipo. El Dr. Tannir entr\u00f3 y dijo: \u00abHay esperanzas para usted; es un f\u00e1rmaco nuevo que no tiene nombre, es un n\u00famero. Nos gustar\u00eda intentarlo, aunque las probabilidades de recibirlo son del 50 %, puede tocarle el nuevo medicamento o el tratamiento habitual\u00bb. El f\u00e1rmaco result\u00f3 ser la inmunoterapia Opdivo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>El Dr. Tannir dijo que, b\u00e1sicamente, le estaba dando a mi sistema inmunitario una clave para atacar el tumor, que ser\u00eda mi sistema inmunitario el que iba a combatir el c\u00e1ncer. Parec\u00eda demasiado bueno para ser verdad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tuve la suerte de que me tocara en el grupo experimental del ensayo. Recib\u00ed el primer tratamiento en marzo y luego segu\u00ed viajando a Houston martes por medio. Para el tercer mes, el tumor se hab\u00eda reducido en aproximadamente un 30 por ciento. Cada exploraci\u00f3n posterior mostraba que el c\u00e1ncer se hab\u00eda reducido significativamente. Y cada d\u00eda estaba m\u00e1s fuerte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mi m\u00e9dico no ha dicho que estoy sin c\u00e1ncer, pero desde que termin\u00f3 el ensayo en marzo ya no recibo Opdivo. Dice que lo que \u00e9l cree que hay en mi h\u00edgado es tejido cicatricial.
