Me extirparon el tumor mediante cirug\u00eda, pero dos a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s regres\u00f3 a los pulmones. Actualmente (2015) el c\u00e1ncer est\u00e1 en estadio IV, diseminado por todo mi cuerpo. Desde 2012 he participado en varios ensayos cl\u00ednicos de inmunoterapia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Creo que la inmunoterapia es mi mejor oportunidad para deshacerme del c\u00e1ncer. La primera opci\u00f3n de tratamiento para el melanoma es la cirug\u00eda, que ya me practicaron, pero una vez que hace met\u00e1stasis y se extiende a demasiados lugares, ya no es eficaz. Me dijeron que, si segu\u00edan intentando con la cirug\u00eda, mis pulmones quedar\u00edan como un queso suizo. Puede parecer algo horrible de decirle a un paciente, pero me resulta una comparaci\u00f3n adecuada y graciosa. \u00bfTodos los pacientes con c\u00e1ncer terminan desarrollando un sentido del humor algo retorcido como forma de sobrevivir? \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tanto lo que hab\u00eda estudiado sobre las investigaciones actuales como las recomendaciones de mis m\u00e9dicos me llevaron a probar la inmunoterapia primero, as\u00ed que ah\u00ed es donde he centrado mi tratamiento. Hasta ahora he recibido interleucina-2, ipilimumab (Yervoy) combinado con IL-21, ipilimumab combinado con radioterapia, IL-15, tratamiento con linfocitos infiltrantes del tumor (LIT) (quimioterapia, seguida de una infusi\u00f3n de LIT, y luego IL-2). Actualmente estoy con MPDL3280A (PD-L1) combinada con cobimetinib (inhibidor de MEK).<br><br>Lo interesante es que la inmunoterapia ofrece la posibilidad de una remisi\u00f3n a largo plazo. \u00bfQu\u00e9 estar\u00edas dispuesto a hacer para poder vivir cincuenta a\u00f1os m\u00e1s?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El melanoma tiene bajas tasas de respuesta a la quimioterapia, y con tantos nuevos y prometedores f\u00e1rmacos de inmunoterapia o tratamientos dirigidos que est\u00e1n saliendo, nunca lo pens\u00e9 dos veces. A mi edad, con menos de 30 a\u00f1os, tengo mucho m\u00e1s tiempo de vida si uno de estos tratamientos hace desaparecer mi c\u00e1ncer a largo plazo. Quiero probar todo lo que pueda darme la oportunidad de que eso suceda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Si bien puede que no est\u00e9 teniendo los excelentes resultados de otros pacientes, creo que los tratamientos han valido la pena. Cuanto m\u00e1s tiempo logre seguir con vida, m\u00e1s probable es que encuentre alg\u00fan tratamiento que funcione. Por supuesto que el primer motivo para seguir probando nuevos tratamientos es encontrar uno que produzca una respuesta duradera. M\u00e1s all\u00e1 de eso, s\u00e9 que mientras est\u00e9 en tratamiento, mi familia y mis amigos (\u00a1y yo misma!) podremos tener al menos un hilo de esperanza de que el c\u00e1ncer va a desaparecer. La esperanza mejora la vida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>En realidad mi diagn\u00f3stico de c\u00e1ncer no ha cambiado mi esencia, aunque s\u00ed me ha hecho madurar r\u00e1pidamente. Me tomo el tiempo para valorar todas las cosas buenas de la vida. Mi familia me apoya de todas las formas posibles y tengo un grupo de buenos amigos que me acompa\u00f1a siempre. El apoyo m\u00e1s inesperado que tuve desde que recib\u00ed el diagn\u00f3stico de c\u00e1ncer fue el de mis compa\u00f1eros de trabajo:\u00a0me organizan los viajes a las citas m\u00e9dicas, me dan regalos y me brindan apoyo emocional.
