Mi preocupaci\u00f3n es vivir y vivir bien.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La historia de Helena<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>En la danza, la sincronizaci\u00f3n lo es todo. Puede significar la diferencia entre atrapar a la pareja y dejarla caer.&nbsp;<br><br>El c\u00e1ncer tambi\u00e9n responde a un cruel reloj. Los retrasos en los diagn\u00f3sticos pueden ser mortales.<br><br>Nadie lo sabe mejor que Helena Ben\u00edtez, una tecn\u00f3loga m\u00e9dica que vive en Bogot\u00e1, Colombia. Originalmente formada como bacteri\u00f3loga, Helena ahora trabaja en la Universidad Nacional de Colombia y lleva la radiolog\u00eda diagn\u00f3stica a regiones remotas de la Amazon\u00eda donde el acceso a la atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica es sumamente limitado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preguntas y respuestas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n<p>En 1994, de viaje por California, not\u00e9 un bulto en la parte interna del muslo de mi pierna derecha. Al regresar a Colombia me diagnosticaron melanoma maligno. Para ese entonces, el c\u00e1ncer se hab\u00eda extendido a los ganglios linf\u00e1ticos circundantes y el pron\u00f3stico era desalentador. Descubr\u00ed que el \u00edndice de supervivencia promedio a 2 a\u00f1os de los pacientes con melanoma metast\u00e1sico es inferior al 25&nbsp;%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Me practicaron una cirug\u00eda para extirpar los ganglios linf\u00e1ticos afectados y comenc\u00e9 a recibir radioterapia y quimioterapia. El c\u00e1ncer desapareci\u00f3 por un tiempo, pero al final volvi\u00f3 y hubo que extirparlo otra vez. Esto pas\u00f3 a ser un proceso doloroso para toda la familia: en los siguientes dos a\u00f1os me practicaron nueve cirug\u00edas para extirpar el melanoma recurrente. Cuando el c\u00e1ncer se adhiri\u00f3 a la arteria femoral, los m\u00e9dicos me dijeron que ya no podr\u00edan salvar mi pierna; tendr\u00edan que amputarla.<br><br>Les dije: \u00abNo, mi pierna se queda conmigo. No tengo ning\u00fan problema con la muerte. Yo deseo vivir y vivir bien, y eso significa vivir con mi pierna\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>La misma semana en que los m\u00e9dicos recomendaron la amputaci\u00f3n, me enter\u00e9 de una posible alternativa de tratamiento. Un colega acababa de volver de una conferencia m\u00e9dica donde escuch\u00f3 a un investigador estadounidense, el Dr. Bruce Beutler, hablar sobre el factor de necrosis tumoral (FNT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El factor de necrosis tumoral es una mol\u00e9cula que liberan las c\u00e9lulas inmunitarias que hace que los tumores de ratones de laboratorio se reduzcan y mueran. Fue descubierto en 1975 por el exdirector m\u00e9dico del Cancer Research Institute, el&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancerresearch.org\/about\/lloyd-j-old\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Lloyd Old<\/a>, y colegas del Sloan-Kettering Institute.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En la conferencia, Beutler, luego ganador del Premio Nobel, explic\u00f3 que el FNT era una mol\u00e9cula incre\u00edblemente poderosa capaz de atacar a los tumores pr\u00e1cticamente de la noche a la ma\u00f1ana. Al principio, los m\u00e9dicos ten\u00edan grandes esperanzas de que esta mol\u00e9cula pudiera convertirse en un tratamiento milagroso para el c\u00e1ncer. Pero, por desgracia, esas esperanzas se frustraron cuando se descubri\u00f3 que el FNT es sumamente t\u00f3xico; las dosis necesarias para eliminar los tumores tambi\u00e9n ser\u00edan letales para el paciente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Llegu\u00e9 al Instituto Ludwig de Lausana, Suiza, en noviembre de 1996. El paisaje de los Alpes me levant\u00f3 el \u00e1nimo.&nbsp;<em>Una absoluta belleza: los Alpes, la Catedral de Lausana, el lago\u2026&nbsp;<\/em>Vi todo eso y dije: \u00abSe\u00f1or, no me dejes morir ahora, me encanta este lugar\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Me somet\u00ed a un procedimiento de perfusi\u00f3n de extremidad con FNT y, posteriormente, me operaron para extirparme el tumor necr\u00f3tico y salvar mi pierna. Cuando finalmente me quitaron el vendaje y mir\u00e9 la pierna, vi que hab\u00eda valido la pena.
