Madre de un adolescente, estaba decidida a hacer lo que fuera necesario para estar viva el mayor tiempo posible para su hijo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luego de la cirug\u00eda, el tratamiento con una forma m\u00e1s antigua e intensiva de inmunoterapia denominada interfer\u00f3n no logr\u00f3 mantener su c\u00e1ncer bajo control. Aparecieron tumores en el cerebro y nuevamente en el cuello, y sus esperanzas de sobrevivir empezaron a desvanecerse. A pesar de que le dijeron que no hab\u00eda m\u00e1s tratamientos disponibles para su caso, se neg\u00f3 a rendirse. Comenz\u00f3 a buscar ensayos cl\u00ednicos y, tras varios meses, se inscribi\u00f3 en un ensayo en la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de California en Los \u00c1ngeles (UCLA) con el Dr. Antoni Ribas, Ph. D., investigador financiado por el CRI y especializado en la inmunoterapia para tratar el melanoma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El Dr. Ribas era el investigador principal del estudio que prueba un nuevo tratamiento que combina dos inmunoterapias: infusiones del inhibidor de puntos de control pembrolizumab (Keytruda\u00ae) e inyecciones de un tratamiento basado en el virus del herpes desactivado denominado T-Vec (Imlygic\u00ae), ambos aprobados por la FDA como monoterapias para el melanoma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Si bien el tumor continu\u00f3 creciendo a pesar del tratamiento, Janie sigui\u00f3 en el ensayo. Seis meses despu\u00e9s, el tumor comenz\u00f3 a desaparecer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hoy ese tumor ya no est\u00e1, pero Janie todav\u00eda no est\u00e1 fuera de peligro; tiene otro tumor m\u00e1s peque\u00f1o en el cuello, pero parece estable.
