High-grade serous ovarian cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer because it often spreads rapidly, returns after treatment, and responds poorly to current immunotherapies. Scientists are increasingly interested in whether changing tumor metabolism \u2014 the way cancer cells use nutrients \u2014 could improve immune responses against these tumors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Sen studies how metabolism shapes immune cell behavior. He previously uncovered important metabolic pathways that control the function of dendritic cells, key immune cells responsible for activating anti-tumor T cell responses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
His fellowship focuses on methionine, an essential dietary nutrient that ovarian cancer cells heavily depend on for growth. Dr. Sen\u2019s preliminary studies show that reducing methionine levels slows tumor growth while simultaneously improving dendritic cell function and anti-tumor immunity. He proposes that methionine restriction acts as a controlled stress signal that helps immune cells remain functional within the harsh tumor environment. Using dietary interventions, drug-based strategies, and advanced immune profiling, he will determine how methionine restriction reshapes immune responses and whether it improves the effectiveness of checkpoint immunotherapy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This work could establish a strong scientific foundation for combining metabolic therapies with immunotherapy and ultimately lead to more effective treatments for ovarian cancer patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
