{"id":25559,"date":"2022-10-09T13:55:11","date_gmt":"2022-10-09T17:55:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cancerresearch.org\/cri-funded-scientists\/qiao-lu-ph-d\/"},"modified":"2023-09-07T09:41:02","modified_gmt":"2023-09-07T13:41:02","slug":"qiao-lu-ph-d","status":"publish","type":"cri_scientists","link":"https:\/\/www.cancerresearch.org\/es\/cri-funded-scientists\/qiao-lu-ph-d","title":{"rendered":"Qiao Lu, PhD"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As the self-derived \u201cdemon,\u201d tumor cells can grow uncontrollably and actively suppress T cells, one of the key \u201cguardians\u201d that plays a critical role in combating tumors, by interacting with immune \u201cbrake\u201d molecules expressed on the surface of T cells. Releasing the immune \u201cbrake\u201d can restore the T cell activity against tumor cells and has shown great promise in clinical studies. However, many cancer patients do not respond to or develop resistance to the immunotherapies that help release the immune \u201cbrake.\u201d One of the reasons for this is that \u201csmart\u201d tumor cells can avoid being recognized by T cells through \u201chiding\u201d the \u201cdemon&#8217;s horn,\u201d namely tumor antigens. Thus, it is necessary to understand how tumor cells can reduce the display or presentation of tumor antigens and identify those tumor-derived antigen presentation regulators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using genetic methods, Dr. Lu has identified two cell surface proteins that can potently suppress tumor antigen presentation. A robust increase in antigen presentation and significantly better control of tumor growth when either protein was depleted in tumor cells has been observed by Dr. Lu. In this proposal, he seeks to understand how both proteins regulate tumor antigen presentation and determine if it\u2019s possible to develop novel cancer immunotherapies by targeting the two molecules.
