B cells, a type of immune cell, can target trillions of different molecular patterns, by rearranging their DNA to customize the antibodies they produce. Unfortunately, mistakes sometimes occur during this rearrangement, especially under stressful conditions, and can cause cancer-promoting DNA damage. To improve our understanding of this process, Dr. Hartweger is exposing B cells to different stresses to see how they damage DNA and how our cells can protect their DNA from stress-induced damage. These insights may then be incorporated into both preventive and therapeutic strategies for patients.
To beat cancer, an understanding of the basic processes of the immune system is fundamental. The CRI Irvington Fellowship allows me to exactly do this: help lay a foundation for beating cancer.
