Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi is University Distinguished Professor at Osaka University. Dr. Sakaguchi is renowned for his discovery of regulatory T cells (Tregs), which can prevent autoimmunity but can also aid tumor survival. He also characterized the biological functions and potential roles of Tregs in immunotherapy applications. His current work continues to elucidate how different signals influence Treg behavior, to help guide clinical approaches for cancer as well as other inflammatory diseases such as arthritis.
Dr. Sakaguchi received the 2004 William B. Coley Award, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, and is a member of CRI’s Scientific Advisory Council since 2013.
When conducting experiments, I always remember that my task is to discover ways to contain diseases.
