Dr. Mark J. Smyth is the head of the Immunology in Cancer and Infection Laboratory at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute.

Dr. Smyth helped make major advances in our understanding of the relationship between tumors and immune responses, including how individual cells and pathways contribute to tumor elimination or survival, how the immune system influences tumor dormancy, and characterization of new immunotherapy targets. His accomplishments earned him the 2002 William B. Coley Award, election to the European Academy of Tumor Immunology (EATI), and the EATI’s Career Award.

In addition to being a member of CRI’s Scientific Advisory Council, Dr. Smyth is a member of CRI’s global clinical investigator network.

Our laboratory is building a detailed picture of how networks of immune cells function to recognize, respond to, and destroy tumor cell masses and metastases.
