Keeping the Beat Going for Cancer Research

One of the things 24-year-old James Lillo was determined to do after receiving a diagnosis of cancer was see his favorite DJ, Eric Prydz, perform one last time. After James posted his wish on the social media website Reddit, Prydz’s team reached out and offered to fly him to L.A. for a show, with the proceeds from the concert going to the charity of James’s choice—the Cancer Research Institute.

Sadly, James died a few weeks before the show, and Prydz along with the Lillo family turned it into an opportunity to honor James’ memory and his desire to help find cures for cancer. Demand for tickets skyrocketed, and a second show was added. The DJ channeled the high emotions in the weeks leading up to the concert into a track he dedicated to James, with proceeds going to CRI to support cancer research. It’s a moving tribute from the Lillo family, Prydz, and his fans in the face of this loss.

Ultimately, James’ benefit show would sell out two nights in a row and raise $60,000 for Cancer Research Institute. In the December 23 episode of EPIC Radio, Prydz revealed a further step he took to honor his fan’s legacy, closing the broadcast with a new track titled “Lillo.” Prydz introduced the track by remarking, “In the days leading up to these events that we did for James, I locked myself in the studio to write a lot of new music. This track that I’m going to play to you now is a track that I’ve dedicated to James Lillo. It was really nice to see that so many of you guys who were there when I played this track understood what this track was.”

“Lillo” has now been released under the artist’s Pryda moniker, and is every bit as transcendental as one would expect such an honorific piece from Prydz to be. Stream the track in full below.
