(October 15, 2007) Forbes magazine published in its October 15, 2007, issue a story describing a new breakthrough approach to immunotherapy in the treatment of melanoma. The article focuses on the work of CRI Scientific Advisory Council Associate Director James P. Allison, Ph.D., and CRI Scientific Advisory Council member Jedd D. Wolchok, M.D., Ph.D., and also provides an update on Sharon Coords, a melanoma survivor who spoke at CRI's annual awards dinner this past June. The new therapy -- anti-CTLA-4 -- was discovered by Dr. Allison and works by blocking one of the key mechanisms involved in immune system inhibition. Dr. Wolchok has administered the new therapy to melanoma patients, often with amazing results. Both scientists receive funding from CRI and are involved with efforts to include anti-CTLA-4 in cancer vaccine studies conducted under the auspices of the Cancer Research Institute/Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research Cancer Vaccine Collaborative.
