Kick Off the Season of Getting With a Day of Giving

"#GivingTuesday™ is a campaign to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations." –www.givingtuesday.org
In the fall of 2012, the philanthropic minds at the 92nd Street Y in New York City came together to tackle an important question—how can we help shift what has become a season of getting into a true season of giving? They set off to create a movement. The idea: to designate a national day of giving to follow Thanksgiving (Thursday), Black Friday, and Cyber Monday. In the same way that retail stores take part in Black Friday and online vendors promote Cyber Monday, the creators of #GivingTuesday wanted to empower the giving community to come together to support the causes that are meaningful to them. Thus, #GivingTuesday was born.
In 2012, more than 2,500 partners from across the United States—including CRI—participated in the movement, fueling a marked increase in charitable giving on the day. This year, the second annual #GivingTuesday falls on December 3, 2013, and with the expansion to include global organizations, even more nonprofit partners are expected to participate.
