Building a Tradition of Giving
December 02, 2013 |
Though the headlines have been focused on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, a new after-Thanksgiving tradition is taking root – #GivingTuesday. Now in its second year, #GivingTuesday is asking people to use the Tuesday following Thanksgiving as a way of giving back to nonprofits and other organizations helping others. Cancer Research Institute is a partner in this year’s #GivingTuesday, offering a way for people to support cancer immunotherapy with their donations and giving hope that one day we can find a cure for all cancers.
We know there are many worthy causes for you to support, and the reason the Cancer Research Institute is asking for your donation is because of our track record of progress over the last 60 years. Not only has CRI consistently built on research year after year, we know how privileged we are to get your donations and use them carefully. The Cancer Research Institute devotes 86% of its funding to research and medical education programs.
That money has been put to good use as we pioneer the science of cancer immunotherapy. CRI Founder Helen Coley Nauts was following in the footsteps of her father William B. Coley when she began using the body’s immune system to fight cancer. Unfortunately she also initially faced the same skepticism he did. Over the course of six decades CRI-funded scientists have shown the immune system has the power to fight cancer, and the last decade brought exciting new advances in the field, including new treatments that are having unprecedented success in the clinic.
We are also pioneering a new way to make cancer research more effective and more efficient. Using our Clinical Accelerator, CRI is filling a key role in working toward the best immunotherapy combinations. The accelerator not only provides funding for clinical trials, but it also puts together the trials and assumes the risk of sponsoring trials. No other organization is connecting pharmaceutical companies, academics, and nonprofits the way we are.
New, effective treatments and cures are within reach. With your support, the Cancer Research Institute and the scientists we fund are already saving lives. And this is only the beginning. Join with us this #GivingTuesday in giving back and fighting cancer.
Donate today and your gift will be matched by one of our donors – doubling the impact of your gift. In this season of joy and gratitude, give so others can live.
