“Through the Kitchen” Raises Record $1 Million

For more than 30 years, on a Sunday evening in spring, The Four Seasons restaurant has closed its doors to the public and opened its kitchen to guests of “Through the Kitchen,” a singular event to raise funds for young scientists working to unlock the secrets of the immune system in the search for cures. On Sunday, April 21, 2013, “Through the Kitchen” had its most successful run ever, raising more than $1 million to benefit CRI’s Irvington Fellowship Program. That evening, more than 300 of New York’s business, politics, media, and philanthropy elite—including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, singer Tony Bennett, and television personalities Barbara Walters and Regis Philbin—came together at The Four Seasons to partake of a menu and décor dedicated to famous women of America past and present. Guests made their way through the kitchen to select from dishes such as Whoopi GoldBURGERS, Amelia EarHEARTS OF PALM, and Ann’s CURRIES, and proceeded to the restaurant’s famed Pool Room where 28 elaborately decorated tables awaited. Tables were dedicated to historical heroines like Pocahontas and Betsy Ross, leading ladies Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, and pioneering personalities Bella Abzug and Susan B. Anthony. A special table honored CRI trustee Lauren Veronis, who created Through the Kitchen and has planned it each year since.

After introductory remarks by event co-chair Perri Peltz, Mrs. Veronis presented a special Through the Kitchen apron to Mayor Michael Bloomberg in recognition of his longtime support of the event. Concluding the evening was a live auction conducted by Jamie Niven, chairman of Sotheby’s, Americas. All proceeds from the auction and ticket sales, totaling $1,004,500, will benefit CRI’s Irvington Fellowship Program, which funds outstanding young immunologists and cancer immunologists at distinguished universities worldwide.
