On Thursday, August 23, 2012, the Cancer Research Institute Young Philanthropists (YP) hosted their fifth annual Midsummer Social. The group’s flagship fundraising party, the Midsummer Social brings together hundreds of New York City people between the ages of 21 and 40 who are committed to ending cancer deaths by advancing CRI’s research. Together with their other events, which include a winter Night in White, dinner parties, and events at NYC bars, the Midsummer Social helps the Young Philanthropists reach their annual fundraising goal of $50,000. Proceeds from YP events fund the CRI Young Philanthropists Postdoctoral Fellowship Award, which provides three years of funding to a newly minted post-doctoral scientist. These funds provide critical support to allow the fellow to explore groundbreaking research while receiving the best training and mentorship under the guidance of a world-class scientist.
This year’s Midsummer Social, which raised $13,000 from more than 270 attendees and donors, took place at Avenue, a favorite New York City hotspot for the club-going younger crowd. Two floors featuring antique furniture and paintings gave a pleasantly striking contrast to the very 2012 MSS5 venue modern music provided courtesy of DJ Bedlam. The open bars, one on each floor, served up generous amounts of top-shelf spirits and sparkling wine to wash down the ample buffet of sandwiches, wraps, hors d’oeuvres, pita n’ hummus, and my personal favorite, cupcakes donated by Molly’s Cupcakes. (If you missed the red velvet, then you might as well have not gone!) A slideshow featured messages of hope and progress from the Cancer Research Institute, along with photos from past Midsummer Socials.
The party heated up quickly, as the hour-long VIP reception opened up to general admission, and sales at the door took off. Despite the high attendance, there was still plenty of room for moving back and forth from the bar, visiting friends, and even breaking out some new dance moves to the sounds of “Titanium” and “Let’s Have a Kiki.” Near the end of the evening, CRI Young Philanthropists Council chair Alexis Feldman drew two winning tickets for prize packages featuring spa visits, restaurant dining, hotel stays, and other great prizes. By ten o’clock the guests were still going strong at Avenue, while some of us headed over to Dream Downtown for an exclusive after party on the Ph-D Rooftop Lounge overlooking gorgeous night views of the midtown NYC skyline.
It was another great event, thanks to all the hard work of the CRI Young Philanthropists Council and especially the event committee: Steven Beltrani, Christina Brown, Harper Ferguson, Alexis Hovey, Sean Kiely, Melissa Phillips, and Emily Slater.
Special thanks also go to event sponsors: Captain Lawrence Brewing Company, Conway Family Wines, DJ Bedlam, Molly’s Cupcakes, Pearl Vodka, and Vitamin Water.
Guest of a Guest photographer Sara Kerens captured images from the night.
