(January 31, 2006) Professor and chairman of the Department of Cell Biology at Yale University School of Medicine Ira Mellman, M.D., a member of CRI’s Scientific Advisory Council, penned in The Scientist (Jan. 2006) a feature article describing the achievements of cancer immunology to date, the immense promise it holds, and the major challenges posed to the development of mainstream, immune-based cancer treatment regimens. In his article, Dr. Mellman sites the need for funding agencies, pharmaceutical companies, and academic institutions to step up to the task of enabling clinical investigation of immunotherapies. The Cancer Vaccine Collaborative, a joint venture of CRI and the Ludwig Institute, was created in 2001 specifically to address many of the challenges cited in Dr. Mellman’s article, including the need for adequate conception, support, and coordination of early-stage clinical studies of cancer vaccine therapies.
